Jeezy Looks Back on 20 Years of ‘TM:101′ – The Blueprint to Corporate Thuggin’

Celebrate 20 years of Jeezy's TM:101! The trap pioneer reflects on the album's creation, its legendary impact on hip-hop, and his journey from the streets to a superstar.

It’s Black Music Month 2025, and we’re celebrating the 20-year anniversary of an album that didn’t just change hip-hop, it literally saved Jeezy’s life: Let’s Get It: Thug Motivation 101. The Snowman himself sat down with Billboard to talk about that groundbreaking debut, and trust me, the stories are wild.

Jeezy started 2005 by giving away his DJ Drama-hosted Trap or Die mixtape for free. His grandma always told him to give before you ask, and he lived that. But that hustle—living off Cristal and Waffle House, getting only “35 minutes” of sleep—caught up with him. He blew out his vocal cords, needed surgery (paid for in a brown paper bag full of cash, of course!), and had months of recovery. “It humbled me and I remember not having insurance at the time,” he laughed. “Imagine that, I had insurance on my Ferrari and not [medical] insurance!” That’s real, man.

He was so messed up he had to write notes to his engineer to mix TM:101. Then, another obstacle hit: the album leaked a whole month early! Jeezy thought it was over, that he’d be forced back to the streets. “I knew that was designed to hurt me,” he admitted. But like a true hustler, he spun it: “That took the pressure off, because the world had heard the music. That was the promo.” Bootleggers became his street team, spreading the word nationwide.

“Soul Survivor” and the Birth of a Legend

Fans went crazy for “Soul Survivor” with Akon, a track Jeezy initially thought was “too big for the album.” But the streets chose, and it became his first top-five hit on the Billboard Hot 100, building massive momentum for the album.

Let’s Get It: Thug Motivation 101 finally dropped on July 26, 2005, hitting No. 2 on the Billboard 200 with 172,000 units. Jeezy had his own championship parade, riding down Peach Street in Atlanta, seeing thousands of Snowman posters plastered everywhere. His raspy flow and motivational bars introduced “trap” to the masses, shifting the whole landscape of Southern rap and giving hustlers the “blueprint to corporate thuggin’.” That debut solidified him as a superstar, transforming him from the streets to the studio.

“If there was nothing else in the world, no book or other mixtapes and albums to represent me, I think people can see who I am and my character, my moral compass, my integrity and everything I’m about in that one body of work,” he reflected. “That’s why I call it ‘the blueprint.’ That’s him, Jay ‘Jeezy’ Jenkins.”

He’s traded Magic City for Greece now, and he’s actually drinking water (finally!), but the same street code and hustler principles from TM:101 are still in his DNA. Twenty years later, he’s even touring that classic with a live orchestra. That’s a true survivor right there.

What’s your favorite track from TM:101? Did that album change the game for you too? Let us know!
